Oakland Car Show & Shine A tradition since 2004 & a Benefit since 2006 The Oakland Car Show and
Shine had it's beginnings in 2004, as a promotion for the Oakland Community Theater's 1950's Musical Review, "Swingin' With the Fifties". It was a humble beginning, more of a car gathering of ten 1950's vehicles than an actual
car show. The event happened in mid- March but the weather cooperated and there was a sunny day. The following year, in 2005, brought OCT's 1960's Musical Review titled
"Groovin' With the Sixties", A much larger gathering of nearly 20 cars headlined the first weekend's show, and created excitement for the well-received musical. Though a rather rainy day occurred, and
the band scheduled for entertainment could not perform, there was increased interest in having a gathering of cars in old downtown Oakland. In 2006, under the guidance of OCT's
then-secretary, Steve Marek, a much bigger venue was planned. The date of Mother's Day weekend was chosen for the show date, to guarantee good weather! That show had a total of 87 entries for categories of cars,
truck and motorcycles. There was entertainment and venders, and the City of Oakland provided support with closing off a portion of Locust Street, providing police supervision, and had complete support of downtown
merchants as the venue grew beyond a small gathering. Cars came from as far as Springfield, Florence and Coos Bay. During last year's 2007 Show, we expanded the show to have
trophies for Five Categories, and had our first year of having a web site to promote the show. We again drew car enthusiasts from throughout Western Oregon, and had both local and far away entrants enjoy the quant
"feel" of history 19th
Century Oakland's downtown Locust Street as the showcase for 59 cars, though the forecasted wet weather never did materialize, and a great time was had by all. Singer/Songwriter Kenny Holmes played music throughout the day, and during breaks, he spun cd's with the classic rock of the 1950's and 60's. There was also an hour of Karaoke featuring local singers who belted it out on stage.
With Seven classes for this 2008 show, including a "special" Stock Paint & Engine Class, the Oakland Car Show & Shine promises to be a great show, with good weather
forecasted by the Farmer's Almanac! Our other new class is actually the splitting of our 1950's, 1960's groups into separate classes, and the addition of a 1970's class, with expanded eligibility to 1977. We welcome
both foreign and domestic cars to enter into any of the Classes listed on the Car Show Poster page of our WEBSITE!!! This year, the Oakland Community Theatre looks forward to this,
our 5th Annual Oakland Car Show and Shine, a Benefit for raising funds for the performances of our Oakland Melodramas again this year. We hope to raise money for sound baffling in our performance venue, the Washington
School Gym, which by its name tells about the present poor acoustics. We would also like to buy spotlights and sound equipment, so we could save the money we have to spend presently in renting equipment. The
return of the Melodrama, with performances in 2006 The Scoundrel of Dagger Gulch, and last season's 2007 smash The Code of the West, marks our commitment to provide family entertainment and opportunities
for the community to become involved.
